The
Internet is a series of computers
known as Servers. The servers are connected via the internet backbone, allowing
the exchange of information between the computers. This connected series
of computers and the backbone is collectively known as the Internet, or the
World Wide Web. You hook up to the Internet through an Internet Access Provider.
A
URL (pronounced u-r-l) is an Internet Address.
Each server has an URL, or a number of URLs, and each page of information
stored on the server has an URL. A URL is much like a street address or a
post office with a box number.
The
Server stores information that can be printed
text, pictures, sounds or video clips which have been digitized. Generally
speaking, information on a server can be accessed by anyone with the correct
URL.
Internet
Access is provided to computer users
by a growing number of Internet Access Providers such as America Online,
Compuserve and most recently AT&T and MCI. The access provider allows
access to the Internet.
A Web Browser
is used to view information on the Internet. The
most popular web browser is made by Netscape. It is available for use from
most access providers. At the top of the browser is a space to enter an URL,
or Internet Address. The computer user enters a URL, or clicks a link and
the browser fetches the information on that web page.
A Search
Engine is used to find information on the
Internet. It is a computer that stores URLs and information about the contents
to be found at the URL. Some search engines are very powerful and frequently
update their data banks with information about new Internet pages. This is
extremely important because of the amount of new pages that are added to
the Internet every day. At this time, the vast majority of internet users
will use Infoseek, Yahoo, Excite or Alta Vista.
A Business
Directory is a categorized listing of businesses
that contain business names and can contain links to their web sites. Local,
categorized business directories are a great source for finding a local business
that may be hard to find with a search engine.
A
Keyword is a word or series of words
that an Internet user types into the search engine, defining the information
that the user is searching for. The search engine then searches its data
bank for web pages that contain the keywords. The Search Engine then displays
a list of pages (sometimes a million or more) that contain the keywords
requested. By defining exactly what you are looking for and using a city
and state in your search, you will get more meaningful search results.
A
Link is a word or series of words that
are highlighted and contain the hidden URL of a web page written in hypertext
markup language (html). Clicking on a link brings the selected page to your
computer screen.
So there you have
it! You start your computer,
sign on, fire up your browser and you are surfing the web. If you are looking
for a product or a service in a particular city or state, be sure to use
the names of the cities in your search.
